Cum On Feel the Hitz - The Best of Slade (2020)

Picture
Cum on Feel the Hitz - The Best of Slade is a compilation album, released by BMG on 25 September 2020. It is the first Slade compilation to be released since the 2009 Christmas-themed Merry Xmas Everybody: Party Hits, and the first focusing on the band's single releases since 2005's The Very Best of Slade.

The 43-track compilation was released in three different formats; digitally, CD and vinyl. The CD edition contains two discs with all 43-tracks. The double-vinyl edition trims the compilation down to twenty-four tracks, twelve on each vinyl. BMG describe the release as a "superlative and comprehensive collection of Slade singles from 1970 to 1991".

The track-listing for the digital and CD editions of the compilation are not in chronological order. Disc one covers the band's biggest hits, most of which date to the band's commercial heyday in 1971-75. Disc two concentrates on singles from both the 1970s and 1980s that were smaller chart hits and a number that failed to chart. The vinyl edition is in chronological order, except for "Merry Xmas Everybody" which is placed at the end of the compilation.

Background
In September 2020, Holder told Tom Lounges of Midwest Beat (Lakeshore Public Radio) of the compilation's release: "Well, it was the record company's idea really. We haven't had a singles compilation out for [about] fifteen years and they thought it was time for a definitive collection. And we wanted to hit, hopefully, a new generation of fans who would discover us for the first time."

Critical reception
  • Classic Rock gave the album a 10 out of 10 rating and wrote: "It's double, it's vinyl, it's got all the hits, everything's correctly misspelled, and on the cover Dave Hill appears to be wearing some sort of bra made out of gilded tortoises. You'd have to be an idiot not to buy it."
  • Hal Horowitz of American Songwriter gave the compilation four out of five stars and stated: "While this [set] is [a] comprehensive collection, it’s not something best appreciated in a single sitting. Absorbing these tunes simultaneously is like eating an entire chocolate cake at once. For those who haven’t been exposed to Slade’s rollicking charms, this may be more than you’ll need to understand their appeal."
  • Paul Davies of National Rock Review gave an 8 out of 10 rating, and described the set as a "classy chronicle" and a "well-balanced collection" of the band's Glam Rock years and their later material when they "returned as a more serious but still fun rock act".
